Main Goal: The main goal of the course is to ensure that foreign healthcare personnel (doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals) acquire and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the Slovak language at a minimum B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), including specialized medical terminology, thereby enabling them to safely, ethically, and professionally practice their profession in the Slovak Republic in accordance with valid legislation.

Partial Goals:
  • • Language Qualification: To prepare participants for successfully passing the official state language proficiency examination required by the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, or a supplementary examination.
  • • Clinical Communication: To master key vocabulary, phraseology, and communication models for conducting a complete medical history, describing symptoms, explaining diagnoses, instructing patients about treatment, and managing crisis situations.
  • • Administrative Proficiency: To master reading, understanding, and creating basic medical documentation in Slovak (patient history, discharge summary, requests).
  • • Collegial Interaction: To enable fluent and professional discussion with colleagues (doctors, nurses, laboratory staff) during shift handovers and consultations.
Target Group:

The course is primarily intended for all foreign citizens who have a university (or secondary school) education in a regulated healthcare profession and plan to work long-term in the Slovak Republic.

Specific Categories of Healthcare Personnel:
  • • Doctors and dentists (especially those who need to pass a supplementary examination or verification of language proficiency by the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic)
  • • Nurses and midwives (who must demonstrate language proficiency for registration and practice)
  • • Pharmacists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals (who come into direct contact with patients and are required to demonstrate knowledge of the state language)

  • Phase 1: Specialized Vocabulary and Communication (Levels B1 – B2)

    Goal: To acquire a solid foundation in the language for everyday life and simple work situations.

    MODULE:

  • 1. Orientation and Myself

    Topic/Vocabulary: Introduction, family, profession, living. Basic phrases.
    Grammar: Alphabet, pronunciation, verb TO BE, present tense, negation. Nominative and Accusative.
    Clinical Context: Asking: „What is your name? Where are you from?“ Basic greetings upon entering a room.

  • 2. Everyday Life

    Topic/Vocabulary: Shopping, transport, telling time and date, free time, food.
    Grammar: Numerals, adjectives (gender agreement), prepositions of place and time.
    Clinical Context: Names of departments, common activities (lunch, rounds, operation).

  • 3. My Health

    Topic/Vocabulary: Feelings (thirst, hunger, fatigue). Body parts (basic names). Describing pain (where does it hurt?).
    Grammar: 7 cases (introduction – focus on most common use in medicine). Imperative mood (simple instructions).
    Clinical Context: „My head hurts.“ „Where does it hurt?“ Patient admission (gender, age).

  • 4. Social and Administrative

    Topic/Vocabulary: Post office, bank, offices. Request for help, complaint.
    Grammar: Basic administrative terms: insurance card, sick leave, prescription.
    Clinical Context: Past and future tense. Verbal aspects (introduction to important aspects). Conjunctions and complex sentences (simple).

  • Phase 2: Specialized Vocabulary and Communication (Levels B1 – B2)

    Goal: To effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, obtain information, and provide instructions
    MODULE:

  • 5. Medical History and Examination

    Topic/Vocabulary: Types of medical history: Family, personal, occupational, medication, allergic. Symptoms: Cough, shortness of breath, nausea, fever, swelling, itching.
    Grammar: Full overview of 7 cases and their usage. Prepositions s/so, bez. Aspectual pairs in instructions (perfective/imperfective).
    Communication Skills: Simulation: Obtaining precise information from the patient. Formulating polite questions (e.g., Have you had surgery before?).

  • 6. Organs and Systems

    Topic/Vocabulary: Cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urogenital, nervous system. Basic pathology.
    Grammar: Full overview of 7 cases and their usage. Prepositions s/so, bez. Aspectual pairs in instructions (perfective/imperfective).
    Communication Skills: Describing organ function, explaining diagnosis. Discussion about basic treatment.

  • 7. Treatment and Pharmacology

    Topic/Vocabulary: Methods of drug administration, dosage, side effects. Names of common drug groups.
    Grammar: Imperative mood (advanced): Formulating clear instructions for the patient and nurse (e.g., Take tablets three times a day after meals).
    Communication Skills: Describing organ function, explaining diagnosis. Discussion about basic treatment.

  • 8. Emergency and Injuries

    Topic/Vocabulary: First aid, accident, injury. Fractures, burns, bleeding.
    Grammar: Modal verbs (must, may, want). Conditional sentences (if it happens…/it is necessary to do…).
    Communication Skills: Handover report/notification (concise, clear, accurate). Explaining patient’s condition to family.

  • Phase 3: Specialization and Official Skills (Level B2)

    Goal: To achieve the level required for successful completion of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic’s state language proficiency verification and for full professional practice.
    MODULE:

  • 9. Professional Documentation

    Topic/Vocabulary: Patient history, discharge summary, laboratory results, imaging method results. Abbreviations in documentation.
    Focus: Written skills: Working with forms, writing structured medical text (objectivization, subjectivization, conclusion). Filling out forms, answering questions. Written part of the exam.

  • 10. Professional Environment

    Topic/Vocabulary: Ethics and law: Patient consent/disagreement, confidentiality, patient rights. Collegial discussion: Consultation, shift handover, criticism and feedback.
    Focus: Official and neutral communication style. Passive voice (used in describing procedures and results). Oral part: Presentation of a clinical case, argumentation and discussion with the expert committee.

  • 11. Specialized Fields

    Topic/Vocabulary: According to the target group (selection): Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Dentistry, Obstetrics/Gynecology.
    Focus: Terminology specific to the chosen field (e.g., newborn care, specifics of communication with seniors, nursing documentation). Advanced phrases and specialized vocabulary needed to demonstrate full knowledge of the field.

  • 12. Culture and Reality

    Topic/Vocabulary: Healthcare system in Slovakia (insurance companies, types of facilities). Cultural differences and patient expectations. Verification of readiness for work.
    Focus: General vocabulary for cultural integration. Simulation: Non-standard situations (e.g., patient does not speak Slovak/is aggressive).
